Match report: Leeds 2-2 Spurs

Sun 13 April 2003, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

English Barclays Premiership

Goals from Teddy Sheringham and Robbie Keane - but a share of the spoils at Elland Road after a 75th minute penalty denied Spurs a win.

Leeds started the brighter and finished the stronger, but it took the penalty - scored by Mark Viduka - to lift their spirits at 2-1 down in the second half with Spurs very much on top.

In a frantic start to the game it is fair to say that it was Leeds who put their marker down first.

The Spurs defence, who welcomed back Anthony Gardner to first team duty were on the back foot in the opening stages and were forced to repel a couple of threatening situations before really venturing into the opposition half.

Kasey Keller was alert enough to make a dash from his goal line after just three minutes to prevent Smith making headway down the right and the same player was not far off with a header from a Harte corner.

Inbetween those chances, the dangerous Kewell threaded a ball across our six-yard box from the left and King did well to avert the potential threat.

Following the 6-1 mauling of Charlton, Leeds were certainly showing an appetite for further success in Peter Reid's first game as manager at Elland Road and Viduka should possibly have done better when Kewell found him in the area. The Australian's shot did not particularly trouble Keller.

The same player came much closer on 21 minutes when Kewell delightfully dinked the ball in to the edge of the area and Viduka controlled with his knee, turned and fired just wide with Keller beaten.

In the first meaningful foray into Leeds territory the lead could have been snatched just before the half hour mark. Poyet left Mills in his wake and squared for Davies, who in turn fed Carr, but the ball forced the full-back too wide.

Just after Davies set Keane free and it was only a last-ditch challenge by Duberry that denied the former Leeds player a clear shooting chance.

It was Leeds, however, that grabbed the lead on 31 minutes when a combination of Bakke and Kewell gave Viduka another shooting chance from just inside the area. This time he did not miss - shooting to Keller's right.

The pendulum then well and truly swung - two goals in two minutes stunning Elland Road into silence.

After just over half an hour on the rack it was Teddy Sheringham who provided the welcome relief with thumping header past Robinson after an Anderton corner was helped on by Bunjevcevic.

Double joy was soon to follow, on 38 minutes Keane embarked on a mazy run into the area sweeping all aside before changing feet and firing right footed past Robinson to give Spurs the lead.

In what would have been an even more remarkable finish to the half, it took a crucial block by Radebe to deny Sheringham a second after he stole away at the back post following an an Anderton free-kick.

The early minutes of the second period were a period of cagey sparring, with neither side wanting to make the mistake that could put the decisive slant on the game. Spurs remained positive and Davies down the right appeared a particular threat - leaving Harte in his wake on a couple of occasions.

In was a combination of Davies and Keane that led to Poyet setting up Anderton for the next shooting chance - the midfielder firing low and wide. Davies then darted into the box before turning back to Keane, who chipped in for Anderton who just failed to connect.

On 66 minutes Keane raced past Harte and whipped in a low cross along the six yard box. Duberry just managed to filter the ball behind with Spurs players ready to pounce.

Spurs were infinitely the better side in the second period, galvanised by the first half comeback and were constantly looking to widen the margin.

But it was Leeds who scored next when substitute Wilcox was impeded by Keller - although both he and Gardner were booked - and referee Rob Styles pointed to the spot. Viduka fired into the top left hand corner to level.

Taricco denied Leeds a possible winner seven minutes from time after Kewell darted down the left and picked out Viduka on the edge of the six yard box. The striker did not see Taricco sneak up behind him to poke the ball away. Bakke then went close at the near post after a Duberry volley.
