Teddy Sheringham
Les Ferdinand

Teddy Sheringham and Les Ferdinand are entering the twilight of their careers, but with 11 goals for the United player this season and a hat-trick for the Spurs striker last weekend, it appears that neither are prepared to slip quietly out of the game.

Upon his first return to White Hart Lane with Manchester United, Teddy Sheringham missed a penalty, prompting the Tottenham fans to chant: 'You're Spurs, and you know you are.' Over three years later, there is little doubt that he is Manchester United through and through.

Ferdinand has scored 18 times in 69 league games over three injury-plagued seasons and that is not representative of good value for a £6m forward, but this season he appears to be finding his form. Last Saturday's hat-trick - his first for Tottenham - came from his only four shots of the afternoon.

That performance took Ferdinand's goals to shots ratio for the season to an above-average 26%, which seems to suggest that he can still pose a problem to even the tightest defences - as Leicester were before Saturday's mauling.

Sheringham, at the ripe old age of 34, has scored with a superb 38% of his shots. However, strangely only 45% of his efforts have hit the target, which in real terms means that he has scored from a staggering 11 out of 13 accurate strikes.

The former Spurs player has also set up three goals for team-mates and given that he has completed 74% of his passes that comes as no surprise. Ferdinand has bagged a total of six league goals this season but is yet to claim an assist and has a slightly inferior pass completion rate (72%) to the man he replaced.

Despite having played an almost identical number of minutes this season, the Tottenham player has been caught offside 16 times - over double the amount (6) that the United forward has strayed off. Much of the reason for this could well be that Sheringham plays a deeper role. That has not stopped Alan Shearer's former international strike partner threatening opposing teams all over the country.

Ferdinand has a history of scoring against Manchester United and his pace - which has not diminished too much with age -aerial presence and strength will cause the home defence all manner of problems. The odds on him being the game's first scorer are 15/2.

Hitting 30-years of age is no longer the footballing death-knell it once was and these two elder statesmen of the English game look set to continue terrorising defences throughout this season - and no doubt beyond.
