Legends round off campaign with a win

Stuart Nethercott made a goalscoring return to one of his former clubs as the Spurs Legends side rounded off their 2015 campaign in winning fashion on Sunday (October 4).

The centre-back got forward to open the scoring for the ex-White Hart Lane outfit as they defeated The Angel Vets 5-2 at Ware FC in Hertfordshire – a club at which Nethercott was manager in 2011-12.

Stephen Clemence returned to the line-up and was also on target – from the penalty spot – as the lads secured victory in the final match before their winter break.

The hosts pressed from the off but it was the Legends who took a fourth-minute lead when David Kerslake sent a free-kick into the box from the right and the unmarked Nethercott headed home at the back post.

Justin Edinburgh, playing on the left wing, went close with a long-range effort before Clemence doubled his side’s advantage on 12 minutes, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way with his penalty kick after Andy Edmonds was tripped in the box.

Legends goalkeeper Gareth Howells made a fine save to keep the hosts at bay, before Clemence sent Kevin Watson clean through on goal and the former midfielder ran on and chipped the keeper to make it 3-0 with only 18 minutes gone.

The hosts pulled one back on 35 minutes when Gino Da’Prato finished from close range after an initial shot had bounced down off the crossbar and it needed another fine low save from Howells to prevent the Legends’ lead from being further reduced 10 minutes after half-time.

It was 4-1 two minutes later, though, as front man Trevor Wilkinson produced a neat finish over the goalkeeper after he’d spilled an initial shot and, after the hosts hit the woodwork at the other end, the Legends’ side of the scoreline was completed when guest player Paul Brant nodded in Edmonds’ cross at the back post on 64 minutes.

Tom Rose netted a consolation for The Angel Vets 20 minutes from time, nudging in from close range on the rebound after another Howells save, but the Legends had already done enough.
