Karen Hills is upbeat - despite a second-successive loss in the FA Women's Premier League.

They narrowly fell 2-1 to Brighton on Sunday, who in turn clinched the FAWPL South title with the win at Brimsdown.

But with the first of three cup finals now just around the corner - the Ryman Cup Final against Charlton at Cheshunt this Thursday (April 14) - manager Karen has been impressed with the performances against champions Brighton and high-flying Cardiff in the last two weeks.

"We played really well against a team that deserves the title and I'm not disheartened by the performance in any way," said Karen.

"It was interesting at half-time because the players were really disappointed to be 1-0 down and felt they'd let themselves down. It just shows the level we're aspiring to now.

"We wanted to stay in the game as long as possible and then take advantage of any nerves that might have crept in for Brighton. It looked like it might work out that way when Bianca (Baptiste) equalised but it wasn't to be."

The team needs one point from their final FAWPL match at Coventry United this Sunday to clinch sixth place.

On a day that saw the club's youth teams win a hat-trick of Capital Girls Cups, Spurs Ladies fell to a narrow defeat against FA Women's Premier League winners Brighton & Hove Albion.

Brighton started off on the front foot knowing that a win would see them crowned champions.

The first chance fell to Charlotte Gurr, who placed her attempt over from Charlie Boswell's cutting pass over the top. Sophie Perry's cross to the centre of the six-yard box just evaded Kate Natkiel, who came within inches of heading her side in front.

Taylor and Natkiel played a one-two inside the area, though Alex Keown's great positional play saw her clear the danger. Riana Soobadoo, Josie Green and Maya Vio closed the gaps well, as Rosie Kmita's pass looking for Kelley Blanchflower was just denied by Boswell.

Wayne did well to keep out Boswell's header from close-range after a deep delivery from Deanna Cooper's free-kick.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Gurr's flick-on arrived at Taylor who made no mistake in placing the ball past Wayne.

Spurs started the brightest after half-time, with Kmita's cross looking for Blanchflower tipped away by Faye Baker. Baker was  again forced to palm away Blanchflower's audacious 30-yard attempt which was creeping in under the bar. Proceeding that clearance, Eartha Pond's corner just evaded Wendy Martin at the far post, prior to Taylor firing over at the other end after a flowing move. Green's 25-yard dipper effort was then tipped away.

Bianca Baptiste was introduced into the fray, and her impact was immediate. Within two minutes of coming on, she drifted into space before seeing her effort arrow into the back of the net after 71 minutes.

Brighton ensured the equaliser didn't hold much value as Taylor doubled her tally with a stunning curling effort from outside the area with 13 minutes left to play.

As Spurs applied pressure, Brighton closed the spaces making it difficult, until one last chance arrived. Soobadoo, Blanchflower and Green combined, before the latter saw her swerving effort kept out.

CUP HAT-TRICK FOR YOUTH TEAMS

Congratulations to Spurs Ladies Under-12s, Under-16s and Under-18s, who completed a Capital Girls' Cup hat-trick in Sunday's finals.

The Under-12s beat Hounslow United 3-1 with a double from Gemma Selby and an own goal, the Under-16s beat Charlton 2-0 with goals from Elish Sulola and Sarah Woodbryne and the Under-18s beat Beecholme Belles.
