Robbie Keane moved to within two goals of his international half-century with a double for the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday night.

The striker, who spent the second half of the season on loan at West Ham, scored the 47th and 48th goals of his international career in the Republic’s 5-0 Carling Nation’s Cup win over Northern Ireland in Dublin.

‘Keano’ captained the side and doubled their tally after Stephen Ward’s opener, latching onto a poor back pass to finish.

Then, following a Craig Cathcart own goal, the 30-year-old was fouled by Adam Thompson in the box and quickly dusted himself down to slot home the resulting penalty.

West Brom’s Simon Cox rounded off the scoring 10 minutes from time, by which time ‘Keano’ had been substituted.
