Internationals - Kane and Eriksen spot on, debut for Winks
08 October 2017|Tottenham Hotspur
Christian Eriksen scored for the sixth straight game for Denmark – this time a penalty – to secure his nation a place in the play-offs, while it was a tale of two Harrys for England in World Cup qualifying on Sunday.
Midfield maestro Christian successfully dispatched a penalty just before the hour mark as the Danes took the lead on the way to a 1-1 draw with Romania in Copenhagen.
The result yielded the point Denmark needed to stay in second place in Group E and enter the play-off shake-up, with eight of the nine best second-placed teams in European qualifying set to be involved next month in a bid to reach next summer’s finals in Russia.
England had already punched their ticket prior to Sunday’s final Group F qualifier in Lithuania, in which Harry Kane, like Christian, scored from the spot in a 1-0 victory for the Three Lions.
Manager Gareth Southgate shuffled his pack and handed a senior international debut to young midfielder Harry Winks, who was only elevated from the Under-21 set-up last Monday night.
Right-back Kieran Trippier also started in what was his first competitive cap for England and only his second overall, playing the full match alongside both Harrys. Dele Alli, who won the penalty from which Kane netted on 27 minutes, was replaced with nine minutes left, while Eric Dier was an unused substitute. It means England finish qualifying unbeaten, with eight wins from 10 matches and 26 points on the board, eight ahead of second-placed Slovakia, who pipped Scotland to a play-off berth.
Elsewhere, defender TJ Eyoma played 90 minutes and midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe 77 as England Under-17s began their FIFA Under-17 World Cup campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of Chile in India.
