Harry: "We wanted to get the fans on their feet"

Thu 14 September 2017, 12:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane took us into the dressing room ahead of Wednesday night’s huge Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

“We wanted to bring energy and get the fans on their feet,” he said. “We were up for it.”

Suffice to say, the team delivered.

Heung-Min Son fired us ahead on four minutes but Dortmund levelled on 11 minutes via Andriy Yarmolenko’s curler.

Our response was swift as Harry brushed off Nuri Sahin on halfway, drove into the box, shifted left of Omer Toprak and rifled into the top corner.

Dortmund impressed in that first half – 70% possession – but we stood firm and then took control after the break. We created a host of chances before Harry drilled home his second for 3-1 on the hour, securing a famous European victory against the 2013 Champions League finalists and current Bundesliga leaders.

“It was a massive game for us,” said Harry, who described his performance as ‘one of the best in my career so far’.  “We said we wanted to improve our home form from last year in the Champions League because that's where we felt we let ourselves down.

“It was a huge game against a tough team and we were up for it.

“We knew it was two attacking sides and whoever was more clinical was going to win. Our defence was solid, we limited them to few chances and took ours when we needed to.

“I thought we played very well and deserved our win. Overall, it was a professional performance.”

In the other Group H match, Real Madrid beat APOEL 3-0 at the Bernabeu. Matchday Two sees us travel to Cyprus on Tuesday 26 September while Dortmund host Real Madrid.
