Fernando Llorente: "No pressure - for me, it was an amazing opportunity"

03 January 2018|Tottenham Hotspur

Fernando Llorente wasn’t feeling pressure as he stepped out for his first Premier League start for us at his former club Swansea on Tuesday night.

Harry Kane had just scored back-to-back hat-tricks against Burnley and Southampton but was on the bench after a bout of illness. The spotlight was on Fernando as he returned to the Liberty Stadium, back where he scored vital goals to help keep the Swans in the Premier League last season.

"There was no pressure - for me, it was an amazing opportunity,” said the experienced Spanish striker, who, let’s be honest, has seen it all before in his career.

“Harry is unbelievable, one of the best strikers in the world. The important thing is that I took the opportunity and helped the team with the goal.”

Of course, he delivered. Fernando glanced home Christian Eriksen’s free-kick for the all-important opener on 12 minutes as we went on to win 2-0 in testing conditions in Swansea - his first Premier League goal for us.

The rain came lashing down and wind swirled around the stadium and Fernando’s hold-up play was important as we dominated the first half. He was eventually replaced by Harry on 69 minutes and Dele Alli clinched victory in the final minute, our fifth win in the last six in the Premier League.

“I'm very happy to score my first goal in the Premier League for Tottenham and help the team,” said Fernando. “It was a difficult game in difficult conditions but the important thing was we were focused and aggressive.

“We wanted to play and move the ball quickly. We controlled the game and played really well, especially in the first half. In the second half they had a few chances and we had a little luck.

“It was difficult. It was raining a lot and when you gave a pass, the ball stopped. I think it was a good game and we need to keep working in this way. It was an important three points. I’m happy.”
