Both these teams have been existing in the shadows of their near neighbours' greater accomplishments in recent years and it would be a shock if Everton or Tottenham could upstage their rivals in 2002-03. However the opening day of the season is a good a time as any to have glorious ambition and blind hope about potential achievements. And Opta Index can reveal where the two teams need to improve in the forthcoming campaign to make ground on the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.
One of Everton's main problems has been scoring goals, their joint-top scorers in the Premiership last season were Duncan Ferguson and Tomasz Radzinski, but they could only muster six goals apiece. The Toffees will need to raise their attacking game in 2002-03 and the emergence of teenage sensation Wayne Rooney through the youth ranks into the first-team squad may help improve their attacking options. Spurs had similar problems last season in that their overall 38.6% team shooting accuracy was their worst rate of all 20 Premiership teams and was not helped by the fact that they struck the woodwork 16 times in 2001-02. Despite being linked with a whole host of strikers including Republic of Ireland World Cup star Robbie Keane and Luca Toni of Brescia in Serie A, manager Glenn Hoddle failed to attract a new centre forward to White Hart Lane and will rely on the considerable experience of Teddy Sheringham with the likes of Steffen Iversen, Les Ferdinand and Sergei Rebrov hoping for a supporting role. But these forwards will have to try and get past new Everton goalkeeper Richard Wright on Saturday, who joined the club after just one season at Arsenal. The England international moved to Goodison Park seeking regular first-team football after failing to dislodge David Seaman as the Gunners number one. One his first tasks will be to help David Moyes improve his defensive record. In his nine Premiership games at the end of last season, the Toffees conceded an average of 2.44 goals per match - more than twice as many as they let in under former boss Walter Smith. Therefore it could be wise to put a few quid on a 2-2 score draw at 14/1 to open your betting account for the new season.
