Thu 09 November 2017, 22:32|Tottenham Hotspur

Eric Dier will captain England against Germany at Wembley on Friday night.

Gareth Southgate confirmed the news on Thursday evening ahead of the first of two high-profile friendlies – Brazil follow at Wembley on Tuesday.

“Eric is an established player in the side now,” said Southgate. “He plays with maturity and intelligence. He understands the game really well. He is also a great role model.

“His approach to everything is very professional. He hardly ever misses a game and plays in an unselfish manner. I think he can be even more of a leader than he currently is and I am hoping giving him this reward and responsibility will also bring even more out of him as well.

“He has the respect of everybody because of the way he is. He connects well with the whole group. He is a really top professional.”

Eric becomes the 10th Spurs player to lead the Three Lions and the second in our current squad alongside Harry Kane.

Harry, missing through injury this time around, was captain for the last two England matches and scored in each of the World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania.
