Cyril Knowles

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

CYRIL KNOWLES (1964-1975)

Everyone knows the phrase 'Nice One Cyril' - renowned after the pop record - and every Spurs fan knows that Cyril Knowles one of the best left-backs to grace White Hart Lane.


A winger early in his career, Bill Nicholson forked out £45,000 for his services from Middlesbrough in 1964 and Knowles soon developed the style of the overlapping full-back, using all his natural ability from his days as a winger to great effect.


Knowles won the FA Cup, two League Cups and the UEFA Cup in his time at Spurs but his England career was restricted to just four full caps with Leeds' Terry Cooper keeping him out.

A knee injury suffered in 1973 eventually led to his retirement and after a spell as manager of Hertford Town he went on to take charge of Darlington, Torquay United and Hartlepool.


Tragically, Knowles died in 1991 after suffering from a serious brain illness.
