Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Spurs - Mauricio's reaction

Tue 21 November 2017, 22:53|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino hailed a “massive achievement” after seeing us win Group H of this season’s UEFA Champions League with a 2-1 victory at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.

Goals from Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son in the second half cancelled out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s opener for the German side as we took our chances, having produced some fantastic football at times inside Signal Iduna Park.

The result means we’re assured of top spot, with holders Real Madrid following us through to the knockout stages as runners-up.

Dortmund are left to battle it out with APOEL – our opponents on matchday six on December 6 – for a place in the Europa League.

“It’s fantastic. I think the reaction after Saturday (2-0 loss at Arsenal) was very good,” said Mauricio, who celebrated his 100th win as Spurs boss. “This is always a difficult place to play but the victory and to be sure now on top of the table – it’s a massive achievement for us.

“The performance was very good. After Saturday, the team wanted to recover the feeling after the derby. It was a massive chance for us today to recover our feeling and then to beat Dortmund here in Germany is always difficult. Dortmund are a great team, a great club, we’re happy with the performance and now to look forward to Saturday (West Brom at home in the Premier League, kick-off 3pm)."

Talking through the way we recovered from Dortmund’s first-half opener, Mauricio went on: “We didn’t deserve to go down on the (scoreline), I think it was an even game but in the second half the reaction was good and the early goal from Harry Kane helped us to come back into the game. I think we played well and deserved the victory.

“Everything was good – the mentality, the reaction, the way we played. Of course, we were qualified but to be first in the group was so important for us. Now we have achieved that we can get ready for the weekend.”
