BENT ON BARTLETT

Darren Bent is hoping to bump into a former team-mate when we take on Kaizer Chiefs in the first match of the Vodacom Challenge in South Africa this Saturday, July 21.

Our summer recruit from Charlton will come face to face with a striker he knows all about - his former strike partner and South African international Shaun Bartlett, who is back on home soil playing for the Chiefs in the Castle Premiership.

Bartlett spent six years at the Valley before being released in May, 2006 and was team-mates with Darren for the 2005-06 season. He is currently joint leading scorer for the South African national team with Benni McCarthy and needless to say, a legend in the Rainbow Nation.

“It would be great to see ‘Barts’ out there,” beamed Darren, clearly looking forward to his first tour in Spurs colours. “He was brilliant in his time at Charlton and I played with another South African, Mark Fish, in my time there as well. They told me all about playing in South Africa and I can't wait to get out there.

“Obviously I played up front with Barts a few times and some of the stuff he taught me was fantastic!

“He will always be remembered at Charlton and rightly so – he scored Goal of the Season during his time there and was a great player for them.”

That goal was a spectacular volley against Leicester City in 2000-01 and Bartlett was amongst the goals again last season for the Chiefs, bagging eight in the Castle Premiership.

The game against the Chiefs will be followed by another test against Orlando Pirates on Tuesday July 24 before the Chiefs and Pirates face each other on July 26 and we take on the winners on July 28.

“It will be a great experience in South Africa,” added Darren. “Obviously I’ve heard from Barts and Mark Fish what it’s like to play out there and it’s something I can’t wait for.”

We take on the Chiefs at the ABSA Stadium (King's Park) in Durban on Saturday, kicking-off at 3.15pm local time (2.15pm UK).
