'We couldn't get going' - Davies, Dier and Vorm on our draw at St Mary's

Mon 22 January 2018, 11:45|Tottenham Hotspur

The prevailing feeling was one of disappointment from the players after our 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday.

We travelled to St Mary's with six wins in eight and 23 goals in the Premier League but couldn't get our football flowing on a saturated pitch at St Mary's.

Southampton took the lead on 15 minutes when Davinson Sanchez unfortunately slid a cross into his own goal, a lead quickly cancelled out by Harry Kane's towering header from Ben Davies' corner. That was PL goal number 99 for the striker.

In the end, the match turned into somewhat of a battle as both teams looked to land the knockout blow.

The big chances arrived late as Erik Lamela was blocked at close range and then saw a goalbound shot deflected just wide. Saints countered with two quickfire chances for Michael Obafemi and Sofiane Boufal - brilliantly blocked by Davinson - and then, in the final seconds, we worked the ball to Harry who zipped his shot across goal and narrowly wide.

Here's what Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Michel Vorm - in for the ill Hugo Lloris - had to say...

Overall thoughts...
"It was always going to be tough, always going to be a fight but we’re disappointed. We wanted to come here and get three points but it wasn’t to be. We have some big games coming up now and we have to be ready for them."

On the match...
"The conditions were tough and it was a bit scrappy at times and we couldn't really get going. We all felt a bit disappointed with a point in the end. Both teams had chances and had the bounce of the ball gone the other way it could have changed the game. Overall, I guess a point each is a fair result but as I said, but we're disappointed with that."

Overall thoughts...
"We had slow start and weren't on front foot. We want to start quickly and strong but we didn't do that. They scored a fortunate goal and we got into the game after that. The second half went back and forth a lot but that's not how we want to play. We want to control games better than that. We go into every game trying to win, so we're disappointed."

Overall thoughts...
"Circumstances were tough for both teams. We didn’t create much in the first half. We were unlucky with the goal we conceded, showed a good reaction after to score but overall we have to do better. In the second half we created a few chances but it didn’t go our way. They also had chances. It could have gone either way. We had more possession and we had more of a threat but we couldn’t finish it off. It’s hard to say it was this or that, it was a combination of everything really. We worked hard, gave everything, it was just one of those games. Overall, we have to take a point."
