Wanyama wins Goal of the Month

Fri 09 March 2018, 10:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Victor Wanyama’s thunderbolt against Liverpool has been named as the Premier League’s Carling Goal of the Month for February.

Our Kenyan international midfielder stepped off the bench in the 79th minute with the team 1-0 down at Anfield on 4 February – and within a minute had got us right back into the game with a thunderous strike from distance that almost broke the back of the net as it arrowed into the top corner.

We all know what happened from there as Harry Kane missed a penalty, Mo Salah appeared to have won it for Liverpool in stoppage time before Harry popped up with a last-gasp spot kick – his 100th goal in the Premier League – to secure a 2-2 draw.

“I think it was one of the best goals I’ve ever scored,” smiled Victor as he collected his trophy from the Premier League this week.

“I reacted before the Liverpool players and I thought I’d just let it go. The ball was bouncing and I didn’t want to think too much so I just let it fly.

“It was a good goal and I’m happy to win Goal of the Month.”

Asked to compare his strike with the 40-yard goal he scored for Southampton at Hull City in November, 2014, Victor said: “I think this one was much better because the keeper was in goal. For the other one, the keeper was out of the goal and that was a bit easier. This one was just unstoppable!”

So does Victor plan on adding to his tally before the end of the season?

“It depends – if the ball is good, then why not?” he said. “Hopefully I can get some chances like that and I can get more. I just want to keep on helping the team.”
