Spurs 1-2 Juventus (agg 3-4) - Mauricio's reaction

Thu 08 March 2018, 01:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino declared himself proud of the team's performances over two legs in the Champions League against Juventus.

Indeed, he could only pick one negative - the result - as two goals in three minutes turned the tie around for the team from Turin, who progressed 4-3 on aggregate.

We dominated the first half and may well have added to Heung-Min Son’s goal to make it 1-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.

Sonny was denied by Gianluigi Buffon and flashed another chance just wide, Dele was also denied by Buffon and Harry Kane managed to skip around the legendary goalkeeper only to hit the side-netting.

However, the balance of the tie shifted in those three minutes in the second half. First, Gonzalo Higuain levelled on the night and made it 3-3 on aggregate on 64 minutes before setting up the decisive goal for Paulo Dybala on 67 minutes as Juve took a 4-3 lead overall and matched our away goals haul at 2-1 up on the night.

We piled on the pressure without reward - in-between numerous blocks and crosses cleared, Christian Eriksen and Son fired inches wide while Harry’s late header hit the inside of the post and appeared to move in slow motion before being hacked off the line.

"We played well and deserved more but in football you need to be clinical and try to avoid conceding goals and chances,” said Mauricio.

“I'm proud because our performance was good in both games and I think we deserved more than Juventus but we have to accept that the better team doesn't always win.

"There were so many positives but the most important thing was a negative and that's the result.

"We are so disappointed, but that's football. We need to learn. All we can do is keep going and be ready for the next game.”
