Supporters' Clubs come together for hurricane relief effort

Mon 02 October 2017, 11:32|Tottenham Hotspur

Members of our official Supporters’ Clubs in Texas joined forces over the weekend to assist the Hurricane Harvey relief effort in Houston.

The storm, which struck a month ago, is reported to have destroyed more than 176,000 homes in Texas, leaving more than 1,300 people still displaced.

Led by Austin Spurs, members of our official Supporters’ Clubs in the state, including San Antonio, showed incredible levels of compassion by travelling to Houston to meet up with fellow Spurs fans in the city and do something to help.

After an early start at Houston Spurs’ regular meeting place, Bar Munich, for a 6.30am CT kick-off, the groups watched our 4-0 victory over Huddersfield before heading out into one of the communities most affected by the hurricane.

Via social media, and with the help of promotion from the Club and the Premier League’s US broadcaster, NBC Sports, Austin Spurs had managed to raise enough money to put a up a new drywall in the home of an elderly family in Dickinson, Texas.

With their hard work complete, the fans attended Saturday evening’s local MLS match as Houston Dynamo took on Minnesota United at BBVA Compass Stadium.

It was a successful weekend and the latest example of how so many of our 155 official Supporters’ Clubs around the world are often a force for good in their own communities.

Carolina Rink, whose mother benefitted from the efforts, wrote to Austin Spurs saying: “The work you guys did is a big help for my mom. She truly appreciates everyone and everything you guys did.

“She feels very blessed to have people like you look after her. It’s truly amazing to see how people come together for those who need it.”

Although Austin Spurs reached their fundraising target, the Go Fund Me page is still live with members vowing to assist other families in need with further donations: www.gofundme.com/AustinSpurs

The Club should like to extend its congratulations to Austin Spurs and our official Supporters’ Clubs in Texas on a truly remarkable effort.
