TOTTENHAM WELCOMES OLYMPIC TORCH
Posted 26 July 2012 4:55pm
Olympic fever hit Tottenham yesterday as the Olympic Torch was carried through Haringey and past White Hart Lane stadium en route to the Opening Ceremony tomorrow evening.
Thousands of local residents and children made the most of the glorious weather to line the High Road as the Torch went passed, many of them waving the ‘Passionate About Tottenham' flags distributed by the Club.
Carrying the flame in the shadow of our famous stadium was Bilal Kamal (pictured), chosen for the honour as he is an exceptional student and athlete, whose determination and courage to succeed both in his academic work and sport has led to a number of successes.
The Torch is on a 70-day tour from Land's End to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford. So far, it has been carried by 8,000 different torchbearers across 8,000 miles. On Day 68 yesterday, it travelled from Harrow to Haringey, via Tottenham, as it nears the end of its magnificent journey to mark the start of London 2012 tomorrow.
A total of 158 people carried the torch yesterday prior to its trip past White Hart Lane, including the likes of England's 1966 World Cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks, as well as two famous Spurs fans - Olympic badminton silver medallist Nathan Robertson and Harry Potter star Rupert Grint.
