LAZIO 0-0 SPURS - HUGO HELPS SECURE POINT IN ROME
Posted 22 November 2012 8:19pm
A fine defensive display led by Hugo Lloris secured a point against Lazio in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Lloris made five fine saves as we came under pressure in the Olympic Stadium, Rome.
At the other end, Gareth Bale had a goal disallowed for offside in the fifth minute and then forced Federico Marchetti to tip over midway through the first half.
The hard-earned point means a draw against Panathinakos in our final match at White Hart Lane on December 6 will be enough for us to progress to the knockout phase of the competition.
Panathinaikos beat NK Maribor on Thursday night, so Lazio are now through on nine points, we're on seven, Panathinaikos on five and Maribor on four.
Andre Villas-Boas made four changes to the team that started at Arsenal. Steven Caulker was back in central defence, Tom Carroll stepped into central midfield for Tom Huddlestone, Clint Dempsey returned and Gylfi Sigurdsson was back on the right.
Mousa Dembele also returned on the bench after missing eight games with a hip injury. Bale captained the team for the first time.
The first half was almost a half of two halves. We started well and had the ball in the net after just five minutes as Bale latched onto Carroll's pass and finished. However, the linesman's flag went up as he went through and play was called back for the free-kick.
Giuseppe Biavi did well to clear Bale's cross from Sigurdsson at the near post and then Lazio's first effort as Senad Lulic fired over from 20 yards.
Lloris made his first fine save of the half to tip Cristian Ledesma's curling 25-yarder onto the crossbar on 18 minutes and Stefano Mauri lashed the rebound wide.
Federico Marchetti was soon in action at the other end as Bale, on the right, tried to surprise the goalkeeper with an inswinging cross, Marchetti got back to touch the ball onto the roof of the net.
Lazio finished stronger though. Luis Cavanda's pass from the right found its way to Libor Kozak central, 16 yards out, but Lloris deflected his measured finish wide with his right foot.
Kozak then headed wide from close range and Lloris was alert as the same player broke through five minutes from time, bravely winning the 50-50.
The second half didn't have the rhythm of the first as play became a little scrappy.
Biava was in the right place again for Lazio to clear Adebayor's dangerous cross and Kozak missed good chance on the hour, angling a shot wide from 12 yards.
Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe entered the fray for Sigurdsson and Dempsey on 63 minutes.
Lloris darted out of his box to clear from Mauri and was there again to save low down to his right as Kozak charged through centrally. Ledesma then curled a free-kick wide from 22 yards.
Dembele made a welcome return to action after 77 minutes but it was Lloris again to the rescue on 84 minutes as Ciani met Ledesma's corner with a downward header just six yards out, Lloris this time down sharply to block on his line.
