Wilson Palacios

Biography

Seen as one of Harry Redknapp's key signings, Wilson became an instant hit with fans on his arrival in January, 2009 and continued to impress with his combative displays in midfield in 2009-10.

The Honduran international started 29 matches in the Premier League and made 37 appearances in all competitions before jetting off to the World Cup in South Africa.

He was joined by brothers Jerry and Johnny in South Africa - the first time three brothers have been at the same World Cup.

Wilson joined us from Wigan and made 12 appearances in his first half-a-season at The Lane, playing a key role as we dragged ourselves out of relegation trouble and into contention for a European place by the time 2008-09 was over.

Wilson has had to overcome personal tragedy to continue his form into the current campaign.

In May 2009, while Wilson was preparing for a Premier League game at Everton, it was confirmed that his younger brother, Edwin, had been murdered by kidnappers who had been holding him at ransom in his homeland for nearly two years.

Wilson himself admitted Edwin's death caused him to think long and hard about whether or not to continue playing the game, but his eventual response is testament to the depth of character this young man possesses.

He quickly got back into the fold during pre-season and, once the 2009-10 campaign started, it did not take long for Wilson to open his goalscoring account for the Club, finding the net for the first time in a 5-1 victory at Hull City in August 2009.

As well as continuing to perform consistently in the heart of Harry Redknapp's midfield, Wilson also helped his country qualify for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa.

Before his arrival in N17, Wilson made 41 appearances for Wigan after joining from Birmingham City in January 2008, where he featured on eight occasions.

He had previously played for Honduran top-flight side Olimpia where he scored 32 goals in 102 appearances.

Wilson began his career with Club Deportivo Victoria, another club in his homeland.
