Gareth Bale

Looked one of the captures of 2007-08 until injury cruelly ended his debut season early.

Cardiff-born Gareth has since recovered and signed a new contract at the Club in August 2008, committing him until 2012.

Signed from Southampton in May, 2007. He made his debut against Millwall towards the end of the 2005-06 campaign and went on to be capped at Under-21 level before becoming the youngest ever Wales international when he came off the bench against Trinidad and Tobago in June, 2006.

His first Welsh start came at White Hart Lane in September 2006 when Brazil provided the opposition and a first international goal quickly followed against Slovakia in a European Championship qualifier - making him the country's youngest goalscorer.

Gareth made 45 appearances for Southampton, scoring five goals before his switch to the Lane.

He made a fantastic start to his Spurs career with goals against Fulham, Arsenal and Middlesbrough before being laid low by a foot injury at Newcastle in October, 2007. Looked to he returning to his best when he damaged the same foot in a tackle against Birmingham in December, 2007 - an injury that kept him out for the rest of the campaign. He made 12 appearances in total in 2007-08, scoring three goals.
