Lucas on first start, Toby on Premier League return...

Wed 18 April 2018, 12:30|Tottenham Hotspur

It was a big night for Toby Alderweireld and Lucas Moura at Brighton, tinged with disappointment that we couldn't convert possession into three points.

Toby renewed his central defensive partnership with his first start in the Premier League since 28 October. Four days after that game at Old Trafford he picked up a serious hamstring injury against Real Madrid, an injury that ruled him out until 7 February.

January arrival Lucas made his first start for us in the Premier League after three substitute appearances.

Both performed well in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Amex. We had the lion's share of possession and chances (16-8 efforts at goal) and hoped to push on when Harry Kane opened the scoring on 48 minutes. However, the lead only last two minutes as Pascal Gross slotted home from the penalty spot. Clear-cut chances remained at a premium as it stayed all-square.

Speaking to us afterwards, both Toby and Lucas agreed how tough the night was...

Toby Alderweireld

Overall thoughts on the match...
"It was difficult. They defended very well, they were compact and we tried to break them down. In the end, I think we deserved the win. We had some little chances and if Coco (Erik Lamela) had a little more luck (with a chance towards the end) we might have come away with three points, but we did everything we could. If you look at the 90 minutes we didn’t give a lot to them. We’re not happy with the penalty but we tried everything. We tried, sometimes you need a little more luck. We put everything we had on the pitch. Unfortunately it wasn’t three points but there is a big opportunity on Saturday to go to the final of the FA Cup. It’s a huge game so we’ll now focus on that.

On his return to Premier League action...
"I’m happy to help the team, I did my best, my body did what I wanted to do so I’m happy the 90 minutes and I’ll try to work from here."

Overall thoughts...
"It was a very difficult game. They are very strong physically and defended well. We tried, we worked very hard and we got one point. Now we need to work hard and prepare for the next game. We scored and one minute after, it was a penalty. That was difficult, but that’s football, it happens sometimes. We work hard every day and tried a lot but it’s difficult when you play against a team that only wants to defend. We need to look forward."

On his first Premier League start...
"It's a big moment for me. I'm happy about that. It's a dream for me to play in the Premier League and to start a game. I'm so happy here, everyone helps me, my team-mates and the staff and I'm so proud of this team and so happy to be here."
