PL4S programme brings tennis to Enfield

Posted on 19 January 2015  - 10:06

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has launched a new series of tennis sessions for girls aged 13-19, as part of its successful Premier League 4 Sport (PL4S) provision.

Based at Bush Hill Park Tennis Club in Enfield, the 30-week programme will offer girls of all abilities the chance to play matches and develop their court skills through coaching delivered by qualified Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) instructors and Tottenham Hotspur Foundation coaches.

With only 30 per cent of females nationwide participating in sporting activity on a weekly basis, it is hoped that the free, girls-only sessions will break down some of the barriers that prevent women from accessing sports provision.

PL4S uses the unique appeal of the Club and the Foundation’s strong links in the community to engage disadvantaged young people in sport.

Tennis was one of four sports added to the Foundation’s extensive PL4S programme in 2013 and aims to bridge the gap between young people and local tennis clubs in their community.

Other sports delivered through the programme include judo, basketball, football, table tennis and boxing.

Targeting secondary school pupils, the PL4S initiative is funded by the Premier League and Sport England and is delivered nationwide by all 20 Premier League Clubs. The programme was developed to support the Government’s ambition to provide young people with the opportunity to engage in regular sporting activity, as part of the London 2012 legacy.

Grant Cornwell MBE, Chief Executive Officer, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, said: “Traditionally, many young people in inner-city London have had limited access to tennis coaching and facilities. However, through the Premier League 4 Sport programme we hope to create opportunities for young women from across our boroughs to participate in fun, accessible tennis sessions.

“Young people who take part in these sessions will not only improve their tennis ability, but also their social skills, helping them to build self-esteem and develop positive attitudes.”

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s PL4S programme sees coaches delivering a range of sporting activities to young people in 22 satellite clubs at schools and community sports hubs across Haringey, Enfield, Barnet and Waltham Forest.
