City 3-0 Spurs - Mauricio's reaction

Sun 30 July 2017, 02:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Naturally disappointed to lose any game, Mauricio Pochettino was quick to underline that fitness remains the priority after our 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in Nashville on Saturday.

John Stones (10 minutes), Raheem Sterling (73) and Brahim Diaz (90+1) scored City’s goals in this International Champions Cup match at the Nissan Stadium.

We had chances as well - Dele Alli (with two minutes on the clock), Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen all had sights at goal in the first half but we were 2-0 down by the time Vincent Janssen was denied by Ederson and then Arijanet Muric in the City goal.

However, in the bigger scheme of pre-season, five players completed 90 minutes – Toby Alderweireld, Ben Davies, Eric Dier, Eriksen and Kane – and that is key with the opening weekend of the Premier League a fortnight away.

“It’s the same message after PSG and Roma,” said Mauricio. “It’s tough to lose, always, but the priority is not about the result, it’s about getting fit and playing.

“Then, it’s difficult to judge. It’s not a Premier League game. We are working to try to get fit and the objective is to start in the best condition at Newcastle.

“Now, it’s about work. We’ve played tough games in America in testing conditions and the most important thing is to train and get fit.

“So okay, I think City were better but we need to continue working hard and to be positive.

“Players played 90 minutes and that is very good news before the start of the Premier League. That’s a good feeling.”
