England senior call for Winks

Harry Winks has been called into the England senior squad for the first time.

The midfielder, 21, back to his best after a being hit by a serious ankle injury in April, has been promoted from the Under-21 squad by Gareth Southgate for the World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday and away to Lithuania on Sunday. He joins team-mates Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Kieran Trippier in the squad.

'Winksy' made his first start of the season against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup on September 19, followed up against APOEL in the Champions League last week and his performances earned a place in the line-up at Huddersfield on Saturday - his first Premier League start since that injury on April 1.

His form drew words of praise from Mauricio Pochettino, who described him as a 'great character' after APOEL and added after the 4-0 win at Huddersfield: “Last season he was important for us, he’s starting to feel well and we’re so happy because he can help the team," he said.

Born in Hemel Hempstead, Harry joined the Club as a schoolboy aged just six, joined our Academy full-time in 2012, made his first team debut in the Europa League in 2014 and had racked up 33 appearances in all competitions before his ankle injury at Burnley in April.

Capped by England at Under-17, Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 levels, Harry played for the Under-21s for the first time in November, 2016.
