'We were determined to bounce back' - Dier and Kane on win at Burnley

Sun 24 December 2017, 09:00|Tottenham Hotspur

There was a sense of 'job done' from Eric Dier and Harry Kane as they spoke about a determination to bounce back from last week's loss at City with a super show at high-flying Burnley on Saturday.

Harry led the way with a hat-trick as we got after the home side from the off, took an early lead and dominated.

It was a fine performance against a Clarets team that had lost just four in 18 before Saturday to take our mini-run to three wins in four and lift us back up to fifth in the Premier League.

Harry grabbed the headlines with his treble - his seventh this year - and has now equalled Alan Shearer's record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year with one game to go to topple it against Southampton at Wembley on Boxing Day.

Here's what Eric - back in a midfield role - and Harry had to say at Turf Moor...

On the performance...
"We played really well. It's been a difficult week for us after last Saturday (at City) and we had to bounce back in the right way and we did that. There was a determination...we knew how big and important this game was for so many different reasons and we were determined to come out and show the right attitude from the start and take control, be aggressive with and without the ball and we did that. This is how we have to continue."

You mentioned 'so many reasons' - what were they?
"Endless reasons...our league position at the moment, coming off a defeat and the results not being as good as they have been recently. Burnley is one of the toughest places to come in the Premier League so it’s a great place to start to put a run together."

How much did you feel we needed that second goal after dominating?
"Everyone felt we had the game under control, we had a lot chances and we would have preferred going into half-time two or three up because we should have really. Thankfully we got the second and third and it was quite comfortable in the end."

On the performance...
"It was a good performance right from the start, winning second balls, running in behind - that's what we needed, especially after last week. We were aggressive and that's what we've got to do and continue against Southampton. It's always tough here, we knew it would be tough, but we knew if we were aggressive we'd get forward and create chances. We should have been more clinical, it was 1-0 for a long time but we're very happy with 3-0."

On scoring that key second goal...
"We wanted the second goal to kill the game and when I scored it, I thought 'right, let's get the hat-trick'. I was happy to put that one away. I'm really pleased."

And then his hat-trick and Shearer's record...
"I'd put myself in a good position (for Shearer's record), three goals behind, I thought 'let's try to get a couple and see what happens' but to get three and equal it, I can now go into the game (against Southampton) on Tuesday (Boxing Day) and try to get the record. That would be a great achievement."
