'Plenty of positives' - Dele, Carter-Vickers, Kane and Vorm on Roma

Wed 26 July 2017, 16:00|Tottenham Hotspur

It was mixed emotions for Dele Alli and his team-mates after our 3-2 defeat against Roma in the International Champions Cup (ICC) in New Jersey on Tuesday.

The positives were certainly there - more good pre-season minutes including 75 for Dele and Harry Kane, Academy youngsters Anthony Georgiou and Tashan Oakley-Boothe relishing an appearance at senior level and of course the way we came from 2-0 down to get back to 2-2 in the final minutes.

The negatives - finding ourselves 2-0 down in the first place and then allowing the Italians to score in the final seconds having got back to 2-2 with only a minute of injury time remaining.

For the record, Roma went ahead from the penalty spot on 13 minutes (Diego Perotti) and Cengiz Under made it 2-0 on 70 minutes. Harry Winks pulled a goal back on 87 and Vincent Janssen levelled on 91 but seconds after the restart, Roma won it through Marco Tumminello.

Dele took a pragmatic view of it all. "We should have prevented their goals but they are the sort of things that we'd rather get out of our system now in pre-season," he said. "There were still plenty of positives to take out of the game so we're disappointed with the result, but we'll take those positives."

Here's what Dele, Harry Kane, Michel Vorm and Cameron Carter-Vickers had to say about the game at the Red Bull Arena, Harrison, New Jersey.

Dele Alli

On playing 75 minutes in only his second friendly...
"Pre-season has been hard so far and I'm sure that will continue but that's what we need. It's great to be out there getting some minutes under the belt again and it's all building up to the start of the season, so we have to stay focused, keep working hard and I'm sure it will be another big year for us."

On our fans in the stadium...
"I'd like to say a special thanks to the fans out here, their support is amazing. I'm happy they got to see us play and we're sorry we couldn't win for them but it was good to be out there playing again."

Michel Vorm

On the game...
"I'm obviously disappointed we lost and that was so unnsary if you see the chances we created, we could have scored more goals and the goals we conceded weren't good from our side, especially the last one if you've just scored the equaliser and come back from 2-0. It's a difficult way to lose a game. However, it's also good to learn so it was very, very helpful and a good way to prepare for the Premier League."

On the quality of the ICC matches on our US tour...
"We're playing against the biggest teams in Europe, first PSG, then Roma. They have a lot of quality and it's great to play against teams that you would normally only play in the Champions League. We still have a game to go and it's been a great trip already."

Harry Kane

A general view of the match...
"I thought we played a lot better in the second half. We had a few chances and it was a shame that we only got back into the game right at the end. There is still a lot to work on. In the first half we didn’t play too well and we got caught out a few times. In the second half we sorted out it and played well, created a few chances and the result isn’t massively important at this stage, it’s another competitive run out against a good side and there are a lot of positives to take."

Cameron Carter-Vickers

Is the spotlight on you a little more as a US international?
"I guess a little but I'm staying focused on doing what I have to do on the pitch and trying not to think about that. It's a great experience to be out here playing against some of the best teams in the world and you just try to learn from everything."

On pre-season and hopes for next season...
"The manager always works us hard and it's a big season ahead. Every player wants to play as often as possible so that's my aim and what I'm working towards."
