Descendants of Club founder enjoy White Hart Lane Finale

How fitting that two great-grandsons of one of the Club's founders, Bobby Buckle, were present at White Hart Lane to see the curtain come down on our home of 118 years on Sunday.

Brothers Ian and Andrew Ludlow, from Guildford, are direct descendants of Bobby, who famously helped form the Club in a meeting held under a gas lamp on the High Road in 1882 and later played a key role in our move to the Lane site.

Bobby was also our first captain and scored the Club's first recorded goal. He became Honorary Secretary in the early 1890s and was on our first-ever Board of Directors in 1898.

Naturally, Sunday was a particularly poignant moment for the family.

“I’m a little bit lost for words actually,” said Ian, 51, who runs a printing business. “Just walking up to the ground, you watch all the crowds coming in here today, they’re all emotional as well but for us, with the family history that we have, our great-grandfather being one of the founders of the club and someone who was instrumental in getting White Hart Lane in the first place, I’m taken aback a bit actually.

“It’s amazing to think of the club, where it started from and where it is now – it’s mind-boggling really. It’s an amazing feeling, just being pitchside now, seeing the ground.”

Andrew, 53, continued: “It’s a life-long story, not only my life but the life of our family, going back to 1882. Obviously, when we look at this stadium, yes, we’re all emotional today but the new stadium will be the fourth ground that Tottenham have played in. This is the third, they started at Tottenham Marshes and then Northumberland Park and then in 1899 moved to this wonderful, wonderful location and all the history embroiled in the place is just unbelievable.

“I’m a season ticket holder but to be here on this day is unbelievable.”

Three more members of Bobby's family were present at the Lane for the 2-1 win over Southampton back in March – his grandson Michael Mackman was joined by great-grandson Peter Kerrigan and great-great-grandson Leigh Stutchbury, with the latter two travelling all the way from Australia, where a number of the extended Buckle family are now based.

“We’ve got a big family spread far and wide and we’re all massive Spurs fans, for the reason that our great-grandfather was one of the founders of this great football club,” added Ian on Sunday. “Since we were young children, Spurs has been a massive part of our lives with everybody involved really. We’re immensely proud to be associated in that manner.”
