Cesay confident ahead of crucial Oxford clash

Kallum Cesay says our Development Squad players go into tonight’s Papa John’s Trophy match at Oxford United full of confidence.

Having endured back-to-back league defeats either side of the international break, Wayne Burnett’s side returned to winning ways in style on Saturday, inflicting Manchester City’s first Premier League 2 defeat in almost a year as we claimed a terrific 3-1 victory at the City Academy Stadium.

We now resume our Papa John’s Trophy campaign with a trip to Oxford in our third and final match of the group stage, as our youngsters once again pit their wits against a senior EFL side.

Having beaten Stevenage on matchday one and then suffered a narrow loss against leaders Cambridge United, we go into tonight’s sitting third in Southern Group H. Victory this evening would give us a great chance of progressing to the knockout stage for only the second time ever – something Kallum feels confident of achieving, especially off the back of the weekend’s performance.

We go into this game with our heads high but also switched on.

“We want and we need to progress to the next stage of the cup and to do that we have to win today – it’s vital,” said the 19-year-old, who has shone in the full-back positions for Wayne’s side this season and started both of our first two games in the competition.

“Everyone really has to be on it and we have to come up with a big performance. It was a big win for us at City – we were all on a big high after the two losses we faced before that – but we go into this game with our heads high but also switched on.

“We’ve studied a bit about Oxford in our meetings, Wayne has given us some help on the way they play and all the other things, but other than that, it’s not too much about them, it’s about how we perform. If we play how we usually do, I feel very confident of getting the result we need.

“These games help a lot in terms of development and learning because it’s real football – we’ve just got to go out there, show what we can do and if we do that, I have no doubt we will win.”

Kick-off is at 7.45pm this evening.
