Tottenham Hotspur has delivered Premier League Primary Stars lessons to children in San Diego as part of a new digital education programme launched by the Premier League in the USA.

The initiative, which is delivered in partnership with education technology provider EverFi, blends EverFi’s existing school resources and those from Premier League Primary Stars to create a bespoke programme which currently engages 12,000 elementary school children in America.

The lessons, which are currently available in schools in Atlanta, Boston, New York, San Diego and Tampa Bay, are all based on the values of healthy living, PSHE and Digital Citizenship and are taught using digital learning techniques and football-themed lessons.

To help promote the programme, the Premier League selected representatives from Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion, Liverpool and Cardiff City Football Clubs, all of whom successfully deliver the Premier League Primary Stars programme domestically in primary schools in their own local communities, to travel to the USA to run lessons and activities for teachers and students.

During the three-day trip, Lucy Peirce, School Sport Development Manager at Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, delivered whole school assemblies, football sessions, active maths lessons and compassion and empathy lessons to children from elementary schools, special needs schools and youth groups in San Diego.

Premier League Primary Stars uses the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills.  Available to every primary school in England and Wales, it inspires girls and boys aged 5-11 in the classroom, the playground and on the sports field.

Tottenham Hotspur staff spend one day a week in schools across the Club’s local community delivering the Premier League Primary Stars programme and, since August, 2016, the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has inspired over 3,500 children in schools across North London and Hertfordshire while working with over 130 teachers.

Lucy Peirce said: “It’s been a privilege to visit so many schools and youth groups in San Diego and pass on our teaching methods and lessons to students and teachers alike. Many of the children we have seen aren’t used to learning in an active way, so it’s been refreshing for them to be exposed to different ways of teaching. We have been overwhelmed with the amount of positive feedback and I’m confident that the teachers will take on board our lessons and continue to deliver them once we return to the UK.”

Premier League Managing Director Richard Masters said: “The Premier League and our clubs place great importance on engaging and inspiring communities. Premier League Primary Stars has been a huge success in the UK, where we have seen the power football has to engage children in learning. We are excited to now extend this programme to the US with bespoke teaching resources which are designed to inspire children to learn and develop important life skills.”
