Heung-Min Son: “I want to improve, I’m still hungry”

Fri 05 November 2021, 12:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son scored the first goal of the Antonio Conte era - and can’t wait to work on a daily basis with our new Head Coach.

Appointed on Tuesday, Antonio, one of the most successful coaches of the modern era, led us to a vital 3-2 victory against Vitesse in Group G of the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday evening.

That was the first step at Spurs for a coach who has lifted five titles in his time at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan, who he led to top honours in Serie A last season.

Sonny, meanwhile, has been a key cog in our machine since his arrival ahead of the 2015/16 season. The South Korean star has scored 112 goals in 294 appearances for us in that time - he's now level third all-time with Martin Chivers in terms of European goals for the Club (22) - and he wants more...

“I’m looking forward to working with one of the best managers in the world,” said the South Korea skipper, now 29, with 96 caps to his name. “As a player, I want to improve. I’m still hungry. I’m looking forward to working with him, I’m so excited and want to take everything from him. I think he can teach me so, so many things. I’m open and so excited.”

As a team, we had to suffer, we did and I’m proud we suffered together, including the players off the bench

Sonny on our 3-2 win against Vitesse

With excitement at fever pitch in the stadium, Sonny struck early against Vitesse, and his goal was followed by Lucas Moura’s cool finish and an own goal to put us 3-0 up inside 30 minutes. What a start!

However, the Dutch side had their own agenda, pulled two goals back before the break and then took the initiative following Cristian Romero’s red card on the hour. We held firm with 10 men for 20 minutes, then Vitesse had two men sent off as we saw the game out to move back into second in Group G.

Now we face Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday (2pm), another crucial match as we return to Premier League action. Having beaten Vitesse, Sonny knows we have to get back on track in the league as well following last week’s loss to Manchester United.

“After a hard result last week, we need to bounce back before the international break,” added Sonny. “We need to prepare well, and everyone has to be ready.

“It’s a tough game. We know Everton, they have always been a good side, so everyone needs to be ready and the main thing is we want to go there and get the three points.”
