Dier: “Everyone needs to give that little bit more”

Eric Dier feels the pain of recent results - and is determined that we work our way out of it.
This week’s 4-0 win against Wolfsberger AC was a ‘step in the right direction’ as a spectacular overhead kick from Dele, a double from Carlos Vinicius and another bullet finish from Gareth Bale saw us into the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League 8-1 on aggregate against the Austrians.
Next up, a completely different test against Burnley as we try to turn around a run of five defeats in our last six matches in the Premier League.
At the Club since 2014, 267 appearances under his belt including 29 of 41 this season, Eric has seen plenty of highs and lows, plenty of unbeaten runs and sticky spells, and he feels we can turn the corner.
“We’re obviously not where we want to be at the moment,” said the central defender, speaking as honestly as ever. “It’s been a disappointing run of results in the Premier League, getting knocked out of the FA Cup as well, of course, not what we wanted.
“We’re the first ones to be disappointed in moments like these. Today (Wolfsberger) helps, and it’s a step in the right direction, but it’s a small step.
“We can do a lot better and we have to keep working hard to do better. That’s all you can do. Everyone needs to give that little bit more, that little bit of extra effort in these moments than usual, because that’s what will get us out of it.”
Asked about the importance of the Europa League, Eric added: “It’s really important given our recent run in the Premier League. It’s nice to have other competitions to focus on and that distraction is welcome, so to be through to the next round is great. It’s a real opportunity for us.”
