Talking targets, and Eric Dier is crystal clear on both personal and team fronts having committed his future to the Club for another four years earlier this week.
The good news was delivered on Tuesday, with the central defender, here since 2014 and approaching 250 appearances (239), stating it felt like he was about to embark on a new journey.
Eric told us: “Personally, my target is very clear, I want to be one of the best in my position in the Premier League and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to stay here and commit to my future here, because I feel like I want to prove myself here, I want to prove myself in this position in the Premier League and Tottenham is the best place for me to do that.
I would struggle with the fact if I’d been here and not won a trophy, and what that would mean for the players, the Club and the fans...
“My clear objective and the manager’s clear objective is to try to win trophies for this Club, because... I would struggle with the fact if I’d been here and not won a trophy, and what that would mean for the players, the Club and the fans, having been on this journey, I need to see it out and have trophies at the end of it.”
It felt like that was a driving force for the squad. “For me, it’s a real must,” he stated. “I feel with the manager and his record, and his mentality towards winning trophies, that was a huge thing for me because when the day does come to leave this Club, I want to leave knowing I’ve done that, and we’ve won a trophy for Tottenham having not had one for so long.
“That’s my clear objective, personally, and as a Club as well, and one I’m extremely focussed on.”
