Dier eyeing ‘clean slate’ for new campaign

Eric Dier headed off for a well-earned break this week with one eye already on the start of next season.

The England international has shone as part of our back four since the coronavirus-delayed 2019/20 campaign resumed in June and, after serving a suspension, came straight back into the side for last weekend’s final-day draw at Crystal Palace, where we secured the point we needed to leapfrog Wolves into sixth place in the Premier League table and secure a Europa League spot for 2020/21.

The disruption to the sporting calendar caused by the pandemic means that the new season will come around quicker than usual and, although admitting his disappointment at missing out on a fifth consecutive year of Champions League football, the 26-year-old is already looking ahead in an upbeat manner as we prepare for our first full Europa League campaign since 2015/16.

I’m really excited for what we can do next season, because I believe we can do a lot.

“I’m extremely positive going into next season,” said Eric, who signed a new contract with the Club until 2024 earlier this month.

“You can’t help but have a negative feeling in the sense of where we’ve finished this season and the season in general - we have to be realistic - but I’m so excited for next season, I’m so excited to have a pre-season with the manager and to have a clean slate with the manager in terms of all competitions.

“I’m really excited for what we can do next season, because I believe we can do a lot.”

A trying campaign on the pitch unfortunately led to us missing out on a place in the top four this year, but Eric was pleased to help us accomplish our mission of securing at least a Europa League place and is already targeting a successful run in a competition that we last experienced in February, 2017, after we were eliminated from the group stage of the Champions League.

“Obviously from the situation we found ourselves in… we still feel like we could have done more after lockdown – you look at the Sheffield United and Bournemouth results specifically – but the Europa League is the minimum and we’re happy that we’ve got that,” he added. “Now we’ll be going into that trying to win it.”
