Harry Kane was quick to congratulate Heung-Min Son on winning the prestigious Puskas Award.
Sonny's stunning strike against Burnley in December, 2019, beat goals from Luis Suarez and Giorgian de Arrascaeta to lift the The FIFA Puskas Award for best goal at The Best FIFA Football Awards 2020, announced remotely at FIFA’s virtual ceremony on Thursday evening. It’s the first time a Spurs player has picked up a FIFA award.
"It was an unbelievable goal, and he fully deserves the award," said Harry. "It's a proud moment for both him and the club, being recognised as scoring the best goal in the world, that's something special."
The pair have combined for 12 goals in the Premier League this season, just one behind the record of 13 for Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton for Blackburn in 1994/95. They have 32 in total, and quickly approaching the Premier League record partnership of Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard on 36.
All angles - Sonny's stunner
Harry also scored two crackers against Burnley in a 5-0 win that day at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - but all the talk was of Sonny's solo afterwards.
The South Korean star collected the ball just outside our penalty area with 30.55 on the clock. His initial burst took him away from Robbie Brady and James Tarkowski and a jink right left Dwight McNeil in his wake. Now running at full speed, Sonny glided past Erik Pieters and sprinted into the box. Matthew Lowton couldn’t catch him, Ben Mee couldn’t get over to cover and as Nick Pope came out, Sonny steadied himself and slotted home from the penalty spot, 31.07 on the clock - 12 seconds of magic, start to finish.
"It looked like he had nowhere to go," added Harry. "There were three or four players around him, he cut inside, took a big touch through to the keeper and he had the composure to finish as well. He’s scored a couple of goals like that, Chelsea at Wembley (in our 3-1 win, November, 2018) was similar, but this was the best goal I’ve seen him score, for sure."
