Ben: "This is the game we look forward to"

High and lows, joy and pain, wins and losses, Ben Davies has seen it all in the north London derby in over six years at Spurs.

Well, that was until July, when the teams walked into an empty Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to do battle in the Premier League, the stadium still closed to fans as the country tackled the coronavirus. We came out on top, and, as always, Ben found the words to sum it all up.

“It felt strange without the fans here,” he told us that July evening after goals from Heung-Min Son and Toby Alderweireld turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory. “We know everyone is out there, we know everyone is still supporting us and we know how much they are behind the team... that was for them.”

Thankfully, we will take the first steps back to ‘normality’ in the latest NLD on Sunday (4.30pm) when 2,000 fans will make a long-awaited return ‘home’.

It’s an exciting time for us and this is a huge game in the context of the season

And what a game to make that return! “It’s a massive game for us, we look forward to it every season, look for it on the calendar and here it is,” said Ben. “We know how big it is and we’re desperate to go out there and win. It’s a nice boost to have the fans back. We know there won’t be too many but any advantage like that is great.

“It’s an exciting time for us and this is a huge game in the context of the season. We know they are a good side but we’re confident with the results we’ve had against them recently and the way we’re playing at the moment, we’ll look to get a result.”

Ben also had words of praise for fellow Welsh international Joe Rodon, who made his full Premier League debut for the club in the goalless draw at Chelsea on Sunday.

“I’ve seen Joe in a Welsh shirt for the last couple of years and it’s no surprise,” he added. “We were delighted to see him get his opportunity, he’s had to wait a while, but he did really well in what is always a tough game. He’s a proper defender, he’s worked hard since he’s been at the club, really given his all every day, deserved his chance and took it.”
