Toby relishing 'exciting' City tie in Europe

Fri 15 March 2019, 12:55|Tottenham Hotspur

Toby Alderweireld is full of optimism after discovering our opponents in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Friday’s draw in Switzerland pitted us against Premier League rivals and current table-toppers Manchester City in an intriguing two-legged tie.

We suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat when we met Pep Guardiola’s men on the domestic stage back in October but, ahead of the return match at the Etihad next month, will face them at home and away in the Champions League with a semi-final match against either Ajax or Juventus up for grabs for the winners.

We have to be confident. Of course, we know that it’s going to be very, very tough but we have the team spirit and the quality.

For central defender Toby, there’s a different vibe around facing the reigning Premier League champions in a European tie.

“It’s an exciting team to play,” he said. “We have to be confident. Of course, we know that it’s going to be very, very tough but we have the team spirit and the quality that we need to go through.

“European nights are always very special and we’ve had some great results and performances in the Champions League over the last couple of seasons.

“I think it’s exciting to play City and we’ll be doing our best to go through to the next stage.”
