Harry pays tribute to the late Jimmy Greaves

Harry Kane is hoping we can put on a performance today befitting of the legendary Jimmy Greaves.

This morning we were saddened to learn of the passing of Jimmy, a true footballing great who spent nine years of his career with us between 1961 and 1970 and became our all-time top goalscorer with 266 goals in 379 games.

The forward began his playing career at Chelsea, today’s visitors to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Harry, who sits second to Greaves in our all-time goalscorers list with 223 Spurs strikes, is hoping we can honour the legendary forward with a victory over the Blues.

“First and foremost, obviously our condolences are with his family and friends,” he said. “It is a sad day but a day where we can celebrate (his life) – obviously he played for Tottenham and Chelsea – and to be here today, hopefully we can come up with a great performance in his honour. Jimmy was an incredible player, an incredible goalscorer, a legend for club and country. It is a sad day but hopefully we can put on a great performance for him.

“He had incredible, frightening (numbers in terms of goals) really. How good a player he was, the goals-to-games ratio that he returned, the goals he scored year in, year out… For someone like me to look at those numbers and try and achieve those numbers and, hopefully one day, go on to better those numbers would be incredible.”
