Newcastle 2-3 Spurs – the numbers

We made it back-to-back Premier League victories on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Newcastle United.

On a day which marked the first game of a new era on Tyneside, the hosts took an early lead with Callum Wilson nodding in with less than two minutes on the clock. We surged back into the game though, levelling on 17 minutes through Tanguy Ndombele before Harry Kane’s first Premier League goal of the season turned the encounter on its head five minutes later.

Late in the first period, the game was suspended after a spectator took ill in the stands but, after he received swift medical attention and was taken to hospital, the match resumed, and we soon had our third – Heung-Min Son prodding home from close range in injury time at the end of the first half.

The meeting’s eventful proceedings continued into the second half where, on 83 minutes, Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey was dismissed after picking up his second yellow card before Eric Dier inadvertently sent the ball into his own net six minutes later to give the home side late hope. However, that goal mattered little as, come the final whistle, we had all three points in the bag to move up to fifth in the table.

2 – The strike was his second goal involvement in as many games at St James’ Park after providing as assist for Harry Kane in last season’s 2-2 draw on Tyneside.

8 – His last eight goals for the Club have all come away from home having scored his first two in our colours at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

1 – It was his first goal in the Premier League since his audacious strike against Sheffield United back in January.

3 – Tanguy blocked three shots in the game – more than any other player on the pitch.

1 – He has lost just one of his seven meetings with Steve Bruce, winning twice, and drawing the other four. He is unbeaten against the Newcastle boss in the Premier League after five meetings although this was his first victory over him in the top flight (four draws).

Players in focus

5 – Heung-Min Son has been involved in five goals in our seven Premier League games so far this season (scored four, assisted one) – not including his cross for Matt Targett’s own goal in our 2-1 win over Aston Villa at the start of October.
