Sessegnon on Sheffield United's 'unique' style

Sat 09 November 2019, 12:41|Tottenham Hotspur

Today’s game against Sheffield United (3pm kick-off) brings back some very fond memories for Ryan Sessegnon.

Twice the 19-year-old has faced the Blades so far in his career and on both occasions (in the 2017/18 season while at Fulham), he has been on the winning side. The second of those meetings stands out for him, especially, as it was in that game that he scored his first-ever professional hat-trick.

Ryan is the only member of our current squad who has played against a Chris Wilder-led United side and speaking ahead of the game, he has given us the lowdown on what to expect from a team with such a ‘unique’ style of play.

A key component of Wilder's philosophy is to involve his central defenders, unusually, in the attack; instructing them to overlap the full backs on the flanks and get crosses into the box themselves.

"With their defenders on the attack as well, it makes it a very open game"

“Whenever I have played them, that style has worked for them really well; it’s an unusual way of playing,” our number 19 explained.

“For the centre-backs to overlap and put crosses into the box is unique, but it works for them, so we have to be wary of that. When I scored my first hat-trick against them, the game was just full of goals and lots of attacking play (that match finished 5-4).

“With their defenders on the attack as well, it makes it a very open game, they put a lot of bodies in the box, so there’s a lot of chances created to score.”

Having made his debut for us last Sunday against Everton and then his Champions League debut on Wednesday against Crvena zvezda, Ryan is eager to get even more minutes under his belt now and show everyone exactly what he is capable of, especially offensively.

It could also be another debut ticked off the list for the youngster today as well, with the chance for Ryan to make his bow at our new home against United.

“I think if anyone has seen me from games last season or previous years at Fulham, you’ll see that I like to get myself in the box, I like to run in behind, create and score goals,” he said. “But also, I track back and work hard for the team. I don’t want to stop there, I'm going to continue to do as much as I can for the team.

“It would mean a lot to me to make my home debut today. Ever since I signed for the Club, I’ve been waiting, eager to get onto that pitch and play at the stadium. If I get the chance to do that this afternoon, I’ll be delighted."
