100 Years Worn with Love: Celebrating 100 Years of our Cockerel
Today marks 100 years to the day Tottenham Hotspur first wore the now world-famous cockerel crest on its shirts.
The match was the 1921 FA Cup Final against Wolverhampton Wanderers held at Stamford Bridge, with Jimmy Dimmock scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory.
Legend has it that although Spurs players started the match wearing jerseys featuring the cockerel, shirts got so muddy in the first half - which was briefly suspended due to torrential rain - that they had to be changed to plain versions for the second half!
The cockerel design has taken on many different variations over the past 100 years and the Club is today launching a campaign to celebrate the iconic emblem’s history:
• On today’s anniversary, the Club will change the avatars on all its social media platforms to the original cockerel design for 24 hours
• We’ll be bringing you exclusive social content and a must-read interview with the family of one of the heroes of our 1921 FA Cup success, Jimmy Banks
• To mark our latest major Cup Final on Sunday, the original cockerel will be on display at Wembley on seat coverings designed by the Club
• From today, visitors to The Dare Skywalk will be able to take home a special edition photo after taking a trip out to the golden cockerel on top of our stadium
Further exclusive video and written content across Club platforms, detailing the illustrious history of the cockerel, will be available in the coming weeks.
The campaign will culminate at our final home match of the season, against Aston Villa, when the Club will wear the new 2021/22 Nike Home Kit for the first time.
Special edition shirts will be worn by the team, featuring wording acknowledging the centenary of the cockerel.
The new home shirt itself pays homage to the original cockerel design, which is featured on the inner pride of the jersey. More on our 2021/22 Nike Home Kit will be revealed in the coming weeks.
We encourage fans to get involved in the conversation on social media using the hashtag #SpursCockerel100.
