Internationals - Cuti into World Cup quarter-finals

Cristian Romero started as Argentina held off a late flourish from Australia on Saturday evening to take their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

The defender played a full shift as La Albiceleste beat the Socceroos 2-1 at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan to set up a mouth-watering clash against the Netherlands in the last eight on Friday.

Argentina looked in complete control once Lionel Messi opened the scoring on 35 minutes and Manchester City's Julian Alvarez punished Mat Ryan's mistake to double the lead on 57 minutes.

However, Craig Goodwin's strike deflected home off Enzo Fernandez to make it 2-1 with 13 minutes remaining and the Aussies created two great chances for an unlikely leveller, first, Aziz Behich was denied by Lisandro Martinez's block before goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved from Garang Kuol in added time.

Earlier, Holland beat USA 3-1 at the Khalifa International Stadium, Doha.
