1 from 30 | Forest v Spurs
Next up in our 1 from 30 series, a late flurry of goals in a 2-2 draw against Forest at The City Ground in March, 1995...
Welcome to a new series for 2022/23 - 1 from 30 - as we mark 30 years of the Premier League.
English football's new dawn kicked-off on the weekend of 15/16 August, 1992 as the FA Premier League replaced Barclays League Division One, ending a structure of Division One-Four that had been in place since 1958. Thirty years on, the Premier League is amongst the most watched and most valuable sporting leagues in the world.
In this new series, 1 from 30, we'll feature a match from 30 years of the Premier League that corresponds with our next fixture.
So, next up, it's Nottingham Forest away. Forest ended a 23-year wait for a return to the Premier League this season by winning the Championship play-offs in May. We haven't been to The City Ground in the top flight since April, 1999 - Steffen Iversen on target in a 1-0 win. Indeed, it's over 17 years since our last visit in any competition, a 3-0 win in an FA Cup fifth round replay in March, 2005.
For our latest 1 from 30, we turn the clock back to March, 2005, and a 2-2 draw with all four goals in the last 11 minutes...Â
Forest 2-2 Spurs - 4 March, 1995
What a rollercoaster season! It began with the heralded arrival of Jurgen Klinsmann and wins in our first two Premier League matches. But that was followed by four losses in five and then another run of one win in eight, we slipped to 14th and Gerry Francis took over from Ossie Ardiles in mid-November, 1994.
That prompted a nine-match unbeaten run and then two losses in 19 matches from the end of November until the end of March that lifted us back up to seventh. Towards the end of that sequence - that would eventually stretch to just three defeats in 25 until May - we travelled to The City Ground to take on a Forest side who sat fifth and were never outside the top five all season.
No surprises then that two in-form teams produced a draw on the day, with all the action in the final 11 minutes. Teddy Sheringham tapped home for 1-0 on 79 minutes, only for a rocket from Lars Bohinen and Jason Lee's tap in the space of a minute to turn the game around with only five minutes left. There was still time for us to hit back though and Colin Calderwood ensured a share of the spoils with another tap in for 2-2 on 87 minutes.
Forest went on a run of eight straight wins from there to be 'best of the rest' and finish third behind champions Blackburn and Manchester United. We stayed seventh after failing to find a win in our last five.
A week after this game, we travelled to Anfield and beat Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup quarter-final, thanks to a partnership masterclass between Klinsmann and Sheringham, who would score 52 goals between them in all competitions in 1994/95. Unfortunately, that cup run ended in semi-final defeat against Everton...
