Ledley in Louisville – Speed Art Museum and the Belle of Louisville – Spurs Women USA Tour

As Spurs Women’s USA Tour got underway on Thursday (11 August), Club Ambassador Ledley King has been exploring the cultural offerings of our host city, Louisville.

First up, soon after the team touched down at the Muhammad Ali International Airport on Thursday evening, Ledley took a trip down river on the Belle of Louisville to take in Kentucky’s largest city from the water.

Built in 1914, while the Belle has been a working boat for almost 108 years, it is also an historic landmark in the states with it being the only remaining authentic steamboat from the great American packet boat era. Sailing down the Ohio River – the third largest river in the United States, which flows through six states from Pennsylvania in the east and Illinois in the west – as the sunset on the Bluegrass State, the cruise showcased the city’s striking skyline at night.

Then, on Friday afternoon, our Men’s First Team’s legendary former captain paid a visit to the Speed Art Museum at the University of Louisville.

The Speed, as it is known locally, is one of the oldest and largest art museums in Kentucky, showcasing a wide range of ancient, classical and modern art.

With a focus on western art, the museum is home to paintings of some of the most celebrated artists, including Rembrandt, Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Currently on display for a limited period at the Speed is Monet’s famous piece, Nymphéas.

Reflecting on our first few days in Kentucky, Ledley said, “We are all incredibly excited to be here in Louisville. The past couple of days have been a fantastic opportunity to immerse ourselves in American culture. I’ve had the chance to explore the city and some of its top cultural attractions – it’s a great place.”
