Burnley got their 2023/24 campaign up and running with a win at Forest in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening - Zeki Amdouni striking late at the City Ground. Vincent Kompany's men had the daunting task of hosting his former club and treble winners Manchester City in the Premier League's season opener on Friday 11 August - Erling Haaland welcomed the Clarets back to the top flight with a goal inside five minutes as City won 3-0. Burnley's next game at Luton was postponed as Luton continue with their stadium development, so next up it was Villa at Turf Moor and another tough start with Villa 2-0 up inside 20 minutes. They went on to win 3-1.

Players to watch

We can pass this onto our former captain, Club Ambassador and Championship expert Michael Dawson, who told us in the summer. "I’ll go with two - Anass Zaroury and Manuel Benson - both wingers, they impressed last season, and those wide players are so important for the way Burnley play, and they both scored big goals in the Championship." New recruits this season include goalkeeper James Trafford from City, forward Zeki Amdouni from Basel and midfielder Sander Berge from Sheffield United.

Manager - Vincent Kompany

One of the playing greats of the modern era, Manchester City legend and captain who led them to their first Premier League title in 2011/12 and three more after that, two FA Cups and four League Cups in 360 appearances between 2008-2019, Kompany returned to Belgium and Anderlecht in 2019 in a player/manager role and was then appointed at Burnley in the summer of 2022. Burnley had just been relegated, but with a new playing style, Kompany secured an instant return, clinching promotion with seven games remaining and the title a few matches later. Capped 84 times by Belgium, he led the Red Devils to third place at the 2018 World Cup.

Last time we met

It was crunch time for both teams in May, 2022. We'd just beaten Arsenal in a red-hot NLD at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while Burnley were in a relegation scrap, and looked like they'd given themselves a chance of survival with three wins on the trot in April. We won a nervy encounter 1-0 thanks to Harry Kane's penalty, Arsenal then lost at Newcastle, leaving us needing a win at relegated Norwich on the final day to secure a place in the top four - delivered in style, 5-0. Burnley, meanwhile, took one point from their last 12 and were leapfrogged by Leeds on the final day.
