Johnson reveals one source of inspiration behind goalscoring streak
Brennan Johnson has offered a fascinating insight into the work he is putting in
The 23-year-old’s rich vein of form has seen him become one of only seven players since we joined the Football League in 1908 to score in six consecutive competitive games and already take his tally to one better than his maiden season here last term.
In a run that started with the dramatic late winner at Coventry City in the Carabao Cup third round on 18 September, goals have become the flavour of the month for the in-form Welshman who hasn't stopped scoring since with strikes in both Europa League wins over Qarabag and Ferencvaros plus strikes in the Premier League against Brentford, Manchester United and Brighton.
During that six-game scoring streak, we have seen an array of right-foot and left-foot finishes on display such as pin-point power across the goal, cute lobs to beat the onrushing goalkeeper as well as the customary arriving at the back post to sweep in from close range.
Although we have become accustomed to seeing that instinctive first-time finish since his arrival from Nottingham Forest, the forward offered a valuable insight into how he has been working hard with the coaching staff – with a special mention to Assistant Coach Ryan Mason – to refine his technique and positioning to make him a more accomplished threat in front of goal which is certainly paying off.
When asked about the different types of finishes in his goalscoring highlight reel, Brennan explained: "I think that's what I want to be able to show. Last season most of my goals were kind of at the back post because we work on a lot of crosses and I'll always have it nailed in me to get in there because I know there are goals to be had like the one against Man Utd.
"I’ve been working with the coaches here and especially with Mase. He's been doing a lot of work with me on picking up positions, the different types of finishes, what kind of part of the foot I'm hitting with and also dribbling and then shooting, so a lot of thanks must go to him because he's been helping me a lot with that.
"I want to show a bit of everything to be honest and want to keep doing what I’m doing at the moment. Obviously, if I can keep building and adding extra parts to my game then I will do that."
These quotes have been taken from an interview with Brennan which features exclusively in the matchday programme for this weekend's Premier League encounter against West Ham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
