Devine on target but England Under-20s' World Cup dream ended by Italy

Thu 01 June 2023, 00:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Alfie Devine scored a spectacular goal for England at the Under-20 World Cup on Wednesday night, but it was in vain as the Young Lions exited the competition with a 2-1 defeat to Italy in their round of 16 clash in La Plata.

Having fallen behind to Tommaso Baldanzi eight-minute effort, created by an exquisite through ball from Giuseppe Ambrosino, Alfie came inches away from levelling the scores minutes later as he rattled the bar with a thunderous effort. On 24 minutes though, he did find the back of the net - and it was with a goal made in Tottenham

Dane Scarlett was the creator, showing neat feet to beat his man on the left before delivering a vicious ball into the box. And that was met by the on-running Alfie, who volleyed home fiercely past the goalkeeper to bring England back on terms.

There was little between the sides from then on in the clash but, ultimately, it wasn't to be the Young Lions' night as, with just two minutes remaining, Italy were awarded a penalty for handball following a VAR Review. Cesare Casadei stepped up and gave Brentford goalkeeper Matthew Cox little chance as he rifled the ball into the roof of the net to book his nation's place in the quarter-finals.

Alfie and Dane made four appearances each at the competition, the former scoring twice and providing an assists while the latter registered a goal and an assist.
