Davinson on wearing the captain’s armband: “You work for this type of moment”

Mon 30 January 2023, 16:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Davinson Sanchez spoke with pride after captaining the team for the first time in our FA Cup win at Preston North End on Saturday.

Approaching 200 appearances after joining us from Ajax in 2017, the Colombia international wore the armband for our recent mid-season encounter against OGC Nice, but this was the first time he’d taken the honour for a competitive fixture, and he led us to a comfortable 3-0 win against the Championship side thanks to Heung-Min Son’s sublime double and Arnaut Danjuma’s debut goal.

Speaking to SPURSPLAY at Deepdale, Davinson told us: “I have to be thankful for the Club and for the players as well, this is my sixth season here, for all the love that the people have given me. As a player, you work for this type of moment, you work for the team on the pitch, the manager decides who plays and you have to be ready.”

Cristian Stellini heaped praise on a new-look defensive unit and particularly the back three of Davinson, Japhet Tanganga and Clement Lenglet as the home side’s chances were kept to a minimum.

Davinson said: “You have to be ready to play in this competition, it’s a competition we know how to play, the players had the experience to come into this stadium, this atmosphere, the team, manager, even the fans who came to support us, we all had to be ready, it wasn’t going to be easy from the start to the end.

“We showed when we were focussed and when we are on the game, we just waited for a moment to be dangerous and to put the game on our side. That’s what we showed and we have to keep going in that way. Fulham was the same. We dominated, we closed any opportunities for the opponent and then we know up front, our quality will always appear, and we had to wait for that moment.”

That moment arrived via Sonny, and Davinson added: “Sonny… everyone knows how good he is. He deserves to give us this type of moment. He’s such a hard worker and this season, things aren’t going the way that everybody – and especially him – expected, but he knows we’re behind him, supporting him, and the supporters are behind him as well. Moments like this are always tough for players, but it’s all about how you react.”
