Drew Spence joins local students to celebrate Black History Month

Thu 27 October 2022, 09:50|Tottenham Hotspur

Throughout October, the Club is celebrating Black History Month, the annual celebration of the UK’s black history and heritage, as part of our commitment to promoting equality and diversity for all.

On Wednesday afternoon, Drew Spence surprised children in the local community for a coaching session and Q&A to celebrate Black History Month.

More than 20 young people joined our midfielder at Duke’s Aldridge Academy – a secondary school located directly opposite Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - to be put through their paces with a series of football skills and drills. Alongside football activities, the children had the chance to join in with dance and drumming workshops as part of our celebration of black history and culture.

After the physical session, the group also had the opportunity to ask the Jamaica international some questions of their own around Black History Month, including who inspired her growing up, how to deal with discrimination and why Black History Month is important to her.

Speaking at the session, Drew said: “It was great to meet so many young people today from the community and join in their coaching session. It’s brilliant to see the Club delivering these types of sessions and celebrating Black History Month. I highly encourage as many people as possible to come down on Thursday as there is something for everyone… and I’ve heard there is going to be another special guest as well!”

Don’t miss out on the final day today, with highlights including:

· Afro-beats Dance Workshops: Sessions run between 10am and 2:30pm

· Carnival Dance Workshop: For 8-12 years old between 3pm and 4pm

· African Drumming Rhythm Workshops: 5-12 years old from 11:30am to 2:30pm, and all ages from 3pm to 4pm

· Football skills and activities: For 5-7 years old from 10am to 12pm, and 8-14 years old from 11am to 4pm

Throughout October, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has been delivering workshops in local primary schools focused on the life and legacy of Walter Tull.

One of the most important figures in the Club’s history, Walter was the first black outfield player to appear in the Football League, making 10 appearances for us between 1909 and 1911.

Walter was also the first British-born black combat officer in the British Army. Tragically killed in action aged 29, Walter was posthumously awarded the British War and Victory Medal.

Spurs REACH – our supporters’ group for fans from diverse and under-represented ethnic backgrounds and their allies – hosted their first in-person event to celebrate Black History Month.

Hosted at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, over 100 people joined Troy Townsend, Head of Development at Kick It Out, for a Q&A panel session alongside Club Ambassador Ledley King, Academy Head of Coaching Chris Powell, Club presenter Rebekah Walker and lifelong Spurs fan and one of the UK’s biggest rap artists, AJ Tracey.

It’s brilliant to see the Club delivering these types of sessions and celebrating Black History Month.
