Internationals - Ben, Joe help Wales gain point in World Cup opener

Mon 21 November 2022, 21:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Ben Davies and Joe Rodon each put in a full shift as Wales came from 1-0 down to secure what could be a valuable point against USA in their World Cup opener in Qatar on Monday evening.

Trailing to Timothy Weah's strike in the 36th minute of a first half the US had dominated, Wales made a change at half-time by introducing Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore, a switch that helped turn the game around in the second half at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.

Ben, earning his 75th cap, came closest to levelling as Wales started to push the US back, forcing Matt Turner to tip over his diving header in the 65th minute. Moore headed just over from the corner.

The pressure told in the 81st minute when Tim Ream crashed through Gareth Bale in the box, a penalty was awarded and the Welsh skipper and talisman fired into the corner from the spot for 1-1, his 41st goal for Wales in 109 caps.

England top Group B after their 6-2 win against Iran earlier on Monday. Next up in the group, England take on the USA (7pm) while Wales face Iran (10am) on Friday.

Meanwhile in Group A, Pape Matar Sarr was an unused substitute as Holland scored two late goals to topple Senegal 2-0 at the Al Thumama Stadium. Senegal next face Qatar in Group A on Friday (1pm).
